The nearby Historic Village of Flat Rock began when families from South Carolina’s Low Country came to Flat Rock to escape the sweltering heat and the epidemic of yellow fever and malaria. South Carolina’s Low Country gentry affectionately called Flat Rock the “Little Charleston of the Mountains.” The entire district of Flat Rock is included in the National Register of Historic Places. Historic Flat Rock is home to several attractions such as: The Flat Rock Playhouse, State Theatre of North Carolina; the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Saint; and St. John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church as well as many unique specialty shops.

Henderson County wineries and breweries provide tours and tasting rooms, to sample mountain grown selections. Henderson County is home to Burntshirt Vineyards, Saint Paul Mountain Vineyard, Sanctuary Brewing Company, and Southern Appalachian Brewery. Sierra Nevada Brewing Company has just opened a brand new, state-of-the-art brewing, bottling and distribution operation, in Northern Henderson County. Sierra Nevada offers tours of the state of the art brewery, a tasting room, and gift shop.
